When it comes to physician assistant jobs, the prospects do not just include the public and private health sectors. In fact, there are many opportunities available through federal government sectors. These include three different sectors.
Within the United States, the prospects for physician assistant jobs in government sectors are very lucrative. Generally, there are three areas that you can look at if you want to enter these sectors with physician assistant jobs, including:
* US state department
* US military - Medical Specialist Corps (army combat/support battalions)
* US Coast Guard
As part of the US state department, you can be sent anywhere in the world that the department has facilities. This means catering to medical needs of state department workers and their families. However, you need to be fully licensed and have a minimum of recent 2 years primary care experience. Alternatively, if you enter the US military, you can be stationed anywhere in the US, Alaska, Hawaii or overseas, supporting regular regimental units (depending on your qualifications) and possibly even assist in front line medical/combat clinic or hospital needs for military personnel and their families. There again, if you choose to enter the US Coast Guard, you will require at least two years of military, public or advanced emergency care experience and meet special physical/professional requirements to qualify for officer's commission status.
Though the prospects for physician assistant jobs within these government sectors are very well paid and have great prospects for advancement, both within the government and public health sectors, the competition for getting these jobs is tough. Besides the regular educational and work experience requirements, in many cases, you may be required to have extensive background (criminal and security) checks, as well as having to enter a security agreement due to the areas and people that you may have to work with and care for.
