Benefits of Having a Locum Tenens Family Practice Doctor at a Clinic

By : Wanda Edwards

It is not uncommon for a family practice physician to need a break. Other times there could be a temporary opening because the clinic needs time to recruit a permanent physician. There is where a locum tenens doctor can step in and provide continued care in the absence of a regular physician.

These doctors are men and women who enjoy traveling and fulfilling needs. They may be at a point in life where they are tired of administrative burdens, but want to continue to offer patient care. Sometimes a locum tenens position is ideal for a recent medical student graduate. It is a job that provides them with experience and income. Either way, those who prefer these positions often feel they offer better inpatient care.

Each place will have a different situation and a smooth transition has a lot to do with a doctor's ability to be flexibility. A quality support staff can also help a practice stay organized and provide continual care without any hiccups. Some doctors will see anywhere from 15 to 30 patients of all ages - pediatric care, adult care, and geriatric patient care. Hours usually range between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Generally, hospital rounds are another responsibility included.

The nice thing about these positions is the physician recruiter service handles most of the details. There's no need to worry about transportation or travel costs or even any housing expenses. The malpractice insurance is covered under the service and compensation is competitive. There are usually health benefits and a retirement plan included.

A locum tenens position isn't for everyone. Not everyone is capable of traveling around the country on a continuous basis. For those who can, the ability to be a temporary doctor plays an important role in maintaining quality health care in a community.
