Is Self-Employment a Better Option?

By : Alexandra Burlacu

Self-employment stands for a different type of career simply because people have the opportunity to develop independently their own professional path. This approach sounds quite appealing as you are your own boss and you have the freedom to schedule your work as you like, yet you must assume all the risks. However, self-employment is a challenge and is not a realistic option for everybody.

Self-employment is not about routine; on the contrary, it involves a high degree of unpredictability. Successful self-employed individuals are extremely dynamic and innovative and above all love to face up new challenges. Therefore, before considering such a career, it is highly recommended to reassess your skills and mainly your personal expectations so as you will prevent gaps between professional reality and personal standards.

First of all, you should be fully aware of the fact that you will never have 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. schedule Monday to Friday because you are the only who can solve urgently any issue and mainly because it is your business and not your job. A flexible approach is definitely the key for self-employment.

Self-employment requires a level of self-confidence that goes beyond the average. A proactive attitude helps you act fast and refine your communication skills. In addition to a positive approach of your business, you are not allowed to give up. You need to pay all efforts before you reorient towards new opportunities.

Multi-tasking is another mandatory requirement in order to pursue successfully an independent career, since no business has specific limits. In contrast with a regular job, being self-employed means to expand your daily duties to some tasks that you have never expected to perform.

To sum up, self-employment turns into a rewarding yet demanding career.
