Child Care Worker Responsibilities

By : David S Caldwell

According to the U.S. census bureau, 26% of children ages 0-4 go to a daycare center or a home-based daycare while parents are at work. With millions of babies and toddlers in child care facilities, it is of utmost importance for these centers to still keep each and every child as safe as possible. There are many different responsibilities of daycare workers which further the development of the child.

First, childcare workers can hold jobs in a variety of different places. They can work at an actual daycare center, or they can provide home-based care. Additionally, they can be part of before- and after-school programs, nursery schools, preschools, and even private households as a nanny or au pair. These jobs can be with babies all the way up to teenagers. However, at any age, these childcare workers still have certain responsibilities for keeping their charges safe.

Many childcare workers perform both administrative and teaching duties. Children must be kept engaged with activities and games, and daycare workers facilitate these games. Additionally, kids learn proper social interaction as well as coordination and other skills while playing games, so it is important for the workers to stimulate the children into this learning. While kids can typically play rowdily, childcare workers must oversee the activities so that the kids are not too rough.

This also involves keeping a safe environment for the children. There should be no sharp objects, such as scissors, in the children's reach. Also, playscapes must have cushioning underneath them to protect a child in a fall. Kids on a playscape should never go unsupervised so that adults can intervene if there is any dangerous activity happening. The bathrooms should be locked, especially for younger children, so that they cannot fall into the toilet and drown.

Sadly, though, not all childcare workers are responsible enough with children. This can not only rob a child of important developmental skills, but it can also put your own son or daughter in harm's way. If your child has been hurt at a daycare facility, you should not let this terrible act of negligence go unpunished.
