Locum Tenens Openings Can Turn Into Permanent Positions

By : Wanda Edwards

If you are having problems nailing down a job after graduating from medical school, then you should check into different locum tenens positions. It can be a way of gaining valuable experience outside of residency and can provide different pictures of how a hospital works. Plus, there are times where a temporary position can turn into permanency if everyone feels the position is a match for the hospital and the doctor.

Most times the ideal locum tenens position would be at a clinic. The atmosphere won't be as crazy as the emergency room and it provides you with time to adapt to being on your own. There is also the ability to ask other doctors in the clinic for advice if it is necessary. It's usually expected that certain things are shared like extra patients and on-call hours.

For a recent graduate, these types of jobs are ideal. Office hours range between 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the week. Most likely, you will have to finish hospital rounds before regular office hours. A family practice doctor provides care to all ages, from pediatric patients to older adults. Some clinics will require the temporary doctor to take over a certain amount of OB patients to help share the load. Now days, it isn't uncommon for a doctor to have necessary knowledge of electrical medical charting.

The other nice thing about a locum tenens position is there aren't overwhelming administrative burdens. However, pay is competitive, and if you used a physician recruiter service, travel, transportation, and housing is coordinated and paid for. The service also provides professional liability insurance and offers paid licensure in the state of the assignment. It is an ideal position for a recent graduate, and it is even better if it turns into permanency later in time.
