By : Scott Garrity

Pharmacy Technician math is a vital part of being a pharmacy technician and assisting pharmacists. You will be expected to have a solid understanding of common math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You will also need to be able to compute percentages, calculate price totals, determine accurate units of measurement and size and more. Besides the numeric skills, you will be working with charts and graphs of data and will need to be able to examine and understand these items.

There are many resources online for help in mastering the math skills you need. Additionally, there are a few good books that cover math for pharmacy technicians. One is from Apha Pharmacy Technician Training and is titled "Complete Math Review for the Pharmacy Technician". This book can be bought on Amazon for about $20. It covers items such as fractions, reducing and enlarging formulas, units and conversions and measurements. The author mixes humor in the writing to avoid a dry, boring read. A second book is titled "Math Calculations for Pharmacy Technicians" and is written by Robert Fulcher. It features a workbook style and is more interactive than a typical book. There are many self tests and practice problems. It covers basic math skills, conversions between measurement systems, reconstituting liquid medications and more.

If you are thinking of becoming a Certified Pharmacy Tech, a large part of the PTCE exam is related to math. Obtaining your certification is very valuable. Most employers prefer to hire Certified Pharmacy Techs and the pay for certified techs is generally more than that for other techs. Becoming certified will open more doors for you and increase your chance for higher pay.

The demand for pharmacy techs is very strong. The baby boomer generation is aging and entering a phase in which they are more likely to be dependent on medications and prescriptions. Mastering the math skills you need is a solid step towards having a rewarding career in this field.
