Every day someone experiences symptoms of a potential heart attack or actual heart disease. Heart disease is one of the nation's biggest killers, which is why doctors with the knowledge and experience don't have to worry about finding a job. Sometimes it may mean the position is available in the city. Other times there is openings for cardiology jobs in a rural area. Sometimes it's just waiting for a position you find appropriate to your situation.
A cardiologist is a medical doctor specializing in various diseases of the heart. It requires a great deal of schooling, including four years of medical school, at least three years of residency in internal medicine, and between two to four years of cardiology training.
Wherever you find a position, a cardiologist needs to be able to diagnose any heart condition and know the best treatment for the situation. Many doctors will provide follow-up care after heart surgeries. They are also required to know the different diagnostic tools of cardiac catheterization, stress testing, radiology studies and others. Depending on the location of the position, many times a cardiologist will see all ages of patients. Sometimes they are younger and have congenital heart defects. Other times a patient is older and has cardiovascular disease.
Most cardiology jobs require a doctor to provide basic and advanced cardiac life support, bedside right heart catheterization, elective cardio version, insertion and management of temporary pacemakers and even coronary autobiography. This means doing at least 100 catheterizations. A cardiologist must be able to do intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and read different tests. These are some of the skills required before becoming a cardiologist.
Hospitals try to find quality doctors to fill cardiology jobs. The goal is to stop heart disease from striking before it takes another patient.
