How To Get a Job in Publishing

By : Dylan Brown

hen it comes to getting a publishing job, it is not a cake walk and requires a lot of research and time. It is not an easy job to get, but it is a job worth having. Here are six steps to achieving this goal:

The first step to finding a job in publishing is to major in English. There are other majors that can be good but most employers look for someone who is organized. A minor in Professional Writing is also good. If becoming an English major does not sit well, major in Journalism instead. It is also best to take a computer class.

The second step is to work for your school's newspaper. It may not be publishing but working as a copyeditor will help the chances of finding a publishing job. This will also be a chance to develop the necessary skills.

The third step is to find internships. It is near impossible to get a job in publishing if there isn't any background experience. Internships will also look good on your résumé. This will help develop more skills that are not offered working in newspaper. Visit your university's career services for a list of internships. If not, the next best thing is to search online. Most internships are offered in the summer, but a few are in the fall and spring. It is best to have at least two internships under your belt. Start interning at local newspapers and magazines and eventually to a much bigger publishing company. Rarely, but not often, you may get offered a job as a full time publisher.

The fourth step is to search online when job searching. The majority of the publishing jobs can be found in New York as well as online. Most job bulletins are now held online and this is the only way of being informed about publishing jobs. Make sure you pay attention to their qualifications before applying for the job to make sure you fit. Employers ask for different qualifications than others

The fifth step is to create a portfolio of your work. One of the main jobs of a publisher is editing. It is best to keep your work from your internships and newspaper jobs. Employers will want to have proof of your work.

The sixth (alternative) step is to start small. Sometimes it is best to start small when trying to find a job as a publisher. In some cases, publishers have started off fetching coffee for their employers and worked their way up. But in many cases book and magazine publishing jobs sometimes start out at a higher level. You can start off as an editorial assistant and within a few years, work your way to having a publishing job.
