The success of a job interview depends on the applicant, so if he screws up, he is the only one to be blamed. The most common reason of not coming up with the right words is nervousness or if not too much effort that results to overdoing things. In order for these things not to happen, an applicant should take note of the things that are inappropriate to say during a job interview.
Here are the 10 things that an applicant should not say at a job interview:
• He must not ask the prospective employer about how much the salary is. It will create an impression that the applicant is only after the money that he is about to earn if ever he gets hired. The employer must be the one to initiate this topic not the applicant. The latter should wait until the former mentions the said topic.
• An applicant must not ask the employer what the company does because it is his job to do the research about basic facts regarding the company before going to an interview. The employer might think that you have less interest to their company.
• An applicant must refrain from using slang words or phrases during the interview. Remember that it is a formal conversation that requires good English grammar. Using slang words is also a sign of disrespect and overly casual. It will create an impression that the applicant is not serious about doing good work.
• The applicant should not ask the employer about benefits, promotions and bonuses that could be in store for him. The purpose of the interview is for the employer to know what the applicant can do for the company and not the other way around. Doing so, can make the applicant appear selfish rather than confident.
• The applicant must not also use cursing words or any kind of profanity.
• The applicant must also refrain from using stereotypical language. He should not refer to persons of other genders, nationalities, sexual orientations, ethnicity, races, religions, handicaps in slang terms.
• He should not criticize former employer or reveal company transactions, controversies or confidential matters about his former employer. This will give the interviewer an idea that the applicant will do the same if he leaves their company. Instead, the applicant should say that he had difference of opinion with his former employer.
• If an applicant is asked if he has questions, he should not say no. Before the interview, he should have prepared questions.
• The applicant should not say that he has no weaknesses. The interviewer might say that the applicant is lying or not thinking.
• The applicant should not tell the interviewer about his life story or bring up personal problems. He should only say what is being asked.
