A Consultant is an expert or a professional in a specific field with ample knowledge of the subject matter. Career in Consulting has become a popular choice among youngsters, particularly after the growth in the information technology. Moreover, there has been significant change in consulting services in recent years. Any project execution or product development or for that matter any domain, such as accounting, human resources, finance or industries such as oil and gas, retail sector, etc., requires individuals who have expertise in specific skills.

Additionally, a consultant can work for several clients wherein he is required to provide deeper levels of expertise than would be feasible for client companies who do not hire consultants for themselves. However, the nature of consulting is temporary and limited to project, product development and marketing.

Despite the remarkable changes in paradigm of consultancy services, the term consultant has remained same. Then there are management consultants, more trained in devising and developing strategies for the top management in organizations to deliver high ROI (return on investment) to customers and stakeholders. The strategy of organizations is to leverage technology to provide high value products, services and ROI to customers.

As consultants are experts in their respective fields of studies, it requires lots of study and some kind of special skills to become a successful consultant. The special proficiency comes through hard struggle and learning which comes after higher education. A consultant with expertise in a specific sector shares his knowledge and experience with a group of people, in a comparatively short span. He uses the way which is exclusive for the group; the success of a consultant depends upon the consultant lies in giving assurance to the company that their problems are taken care of.

After the liberalization of Indian economy, numerous corporate companies have come with even bigger projects which require excellent expertise over various sections and the same has led to immense growth in consultancy services in India. The requirement of consultants in accounts, finance, automobiles, banking and financial services, etc. is churning a huge demand in consultancy services. Whereas some big consultancy services serve Fortune 500 and 1000 companies, some small and coming up consultancies offer services to small and medium size enterprises.

Scope of consulting jobs in India

The luxury of consultancy services is that a consultant can work in both ways i.e. can open his own office or can work for some or many corporate organizations. Whereas various firms in India hire consultants for various operations or expert services, many Consultants work from home or office with the help of telephone and fax machine. As the shape of Indian economy is bulging, consultancy jobs are going to be coming up in IT, Operations, Human Resources, finance, Health care, marketing, etc.
