Self-Employed to Employed - How to Stand Out in Your $100k Job Search

By : Tim Houghten

There is no doubt that unemployment is at an incredible high and that there is more competition for every available six figure job out there. At the same time so many of the companies that have folded were small business or those in industries where many of those who where employed were actually independent contractors or self-employed. When it comes to looking for new six figure jobs these job seekers can be at a slight disadvantage or at least face tougher interviews unless they know how to sell themselves correctly.

The problem is that potential employers for six figure jobs can be wary about hiring those who were previously independent contractors as opposed full time salaried employees as the assumption is of course in their previous position these job seekers enjoyed a lot of freedom to set their own schedules and work as they pleased without having constant management and strict rules. Of course you have to wonder how they will make the transition back into the regular work force and deal with a normal business schedule and following orders. It is a fair concern, however not warranted in many cases.

So when seeking out new six figure jobs how do you eliminate this as a roadblock? Firstly, down play the fact that you were actually considered self-employed on your resume and cover letter. Don´t lie, there is just no need to mention it. However if it is clear from your previous job titles that you were self-employed. Be sure to include a brief sentence to paint it in a light that actually makes you a better candidate than others who have strictly always been salaried employees.

You must also be prepared to be quizzed on this during any interviews for six figure jobs. Clearly the reality is that as an independent contractor you have probably become more sensitive to the needs of upper management, have actually been used to putting in many more hours than the normal 9-5 and have had to be much more creative and innovative. In fact as a self-employed person or independent contractor you generally don´t get out of bed unless you are going to make money. An employer should definitely put a premium on a candidate for their six figure jobs that is focused on hustling and making money for the company rather than someone who is just used to filling a chair.
