In most cases, college students will be required to complete internships as part of their degree requirements. There are many benefits to an internship, particularly the hands on experience and networking opportunities. To get the most out of an internship experience, there are a few things students should look for when going over their options.
One of the most important parts of any internship is the hands on experience but, surprisingly, not all internships include it. Not always, but sometimes when students intern with major corporations they end up doing not much more than fetching coffee and running errands. Students should not rule out the possibility of interning with smaller companies because they may be less likely to get lost in the shuffle and, as a result, will get more actual experience.
Students should also look for internships that will present them with a lot of opportunities for networking. Perhaps one option has the student sitting in an office every day while another sends them out to various conferences. The second option would allow them to meet more people in the industry who may be able to help them when they enter the highly competitive job market after graduation.
When sorting through the internship options, a student should think about which companies they may actually want to work for someday. If one of those companies is offering an internship, that would be the first place to apply. An internship is a great way to get a foot in the door with a company and become a much more desirable candidate for a job after graduating from school.
Of course, the ideal internship would be a paid position and these are the ones that most students will want to look for first. However, this does not mean that students should simply reject any internship that is not paid. The experience and connections that they will gain are far more valuable than any paycheck and there may be additional perks to any position that they may not have even thought about before.
Choosing the right internships is an important choice and it is not one that any college student should take lightly. Students should seek internships that are relevant to the career they are pursuing and, if possible, with the company they would like to work for someday. They should also be open to the idea of interning with a small company who may be able to give them more opportunities for hands on experience. By keeping these things in mind, any student should have a positive experience with the internship they choose.
