What Kind of Homeland Security Jobs Are There?

The Department of Homeland Security is one of the largest departments currently in existence within the American government. This department has four primary mission branches and each of them has an assortment of jobs for interested applicants. Though, each of these jobs has different requirements and joining criteria they all fall under the same department and have similar rules and regulations.

The four types of job paths for homeland security jobs are Mission Support, Law Enforcement, Immigration and Travel Security, and Prevention and Response careers. These career paths each have their own special grouping and job skill requirements.

A few typical homeland security jobs available for Mission Support career specialist are the Military Advisor's office, Office of the Secretary, and the National Cyber security Center. There are dozens of other basic areas in which to work in this career field, however. Within each field there are numerous types of jobs ranging from clerical workers, to human resource and training officers. The pay ranges from thirty to one hundred twenty plus thousand dollars per year. This branch specializes in careers in the medical and legal fields among many others.

The Law Enforcement branch of homeland security is far more readily known to the public. This branch is designed to serve and protect the citizenry of the United States of America directly. The Homeland Security branch is responsible for safe guarding individuals such as the president and many other important political figures. It focuses on enforcing the laws of the land, protecting the borders of the country, and inter-agency training programs for law enforcement personnel. A few examples of the offices involved in this branch are the US Secret Service, the US Customs and Border Protection, and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

The Immigration and Travel Security career options for homeland security jobs involves protecting the transportation systems of the United States. This branch also oversees the lawful immigration of people to US related components. This service is the legal branch of the Immigration service. The two best known offices in this branch are the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), and US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Prevention and Response related homeland security jobs focus on protecting citizens, economic capacity, and similar concepts in a maritime region. This branch also provides disaster relief in times of emergency. These individuals are the law enforcement branch of the seas and public works professionals in many people's eyes. This branch has some of the most well known job opportunities available. The two best known components of this branch are FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and the US Coast Guard.
