Internships - What to Expect When Starting an Internship

By : William Lowrey

Starting their internships can be an intimidating experience for many students. Although it is very exciting, many students have never been in a professional environment before and are not sure what it will be like. Knowing what to expect when starting an internship is the best way to calm the jitters and get excited for a fantastic experience.

Fun or Hard Work....or Both. Expectations Are Important
The first thing that new interns should realize is that they will not have the most glamorous responsibilities when they begin their internships. In many cases, they will be asked to do things like sorting mail, answering phones or even just observing. The important thing to remember is that they are paying their dues and if they take pride in these little responsibilities, they will get to the exciting things before they know it.

Learn Some Memory Tricks - You Are Meeting Lots of People
Another thing that students can expect is to meet a lot of new people at once. This can be intimidating, but it is actually great because everyone has the potential to become a valuable contact. A good intern will take in everything from everyone they meet and decide what feels right for them. Remember to be friendly to everyone, from the person cleaning the floors to the person running the show. When possible, use people's names. This will show an attention to detail and that you actually appreciate the role that everyone plays in the success of the company. Every good leader addresses their staff by name, regardless of the size of the operation.

It May Be Summer - But The Learning Will Continue
The best internships for college students are the ones that result in a great deal of learning. This means that students can expect to receive a lot of information in a short amount of time. The important thing is to pay close attention and not get overwhelmed. Take notes and do not be afraid to ask questions about anything that seems confusing.

New Schedule Means Making Some Personal Changes
Many college students have learned how to work their schedules so that they do not have class until noon and are off on Fridays. When they start their internships, they can expect a completely new schedule that they may have some trouble getting used to. To deal with the early mornings and long weeks, they should expect to start taking extra good care of themselves. It is a good idea to eat breakfast every morning and get plenty of sleep in order to be sharp for the work day.

Beginning internships means that students will need to acclimate themselves to new surroundings, new ideas and new people. They even need to readjust themselves to accommodate their new schedule. Knowing what to expect is half the battle of having a successful internship experience. Students who are able to adapt will learn a lot and have a great time.
